In the age of flappers, bootlegging, and silent film, Evie is sent to stay with her Uncle Will in Manhattan after causing a scandal in Ohio when she slandered the son of a prominent man in town. In New York, she expects glitz and glamour, but instead she finds her uncle brought in as a consultant on a murder case and her unique powers as a Diviner come in handy. She can hold a personal object and glean information from it. Depending on how hard she concentrates, she can tell a person what they ate for lunch or their deepest, darkest secrets. As the murders stack up, Evie, her uncle, and her friends discover the murders are in line with the sacrifices outlined in the Book of the Brethren, and the murderer is making offerings of his victims in order to bring forth the Beast who will cleanse the Earth of all sinners before he rules over it. Once the eleventh sacrifice is made on the night of a comet's return, nothing can stop the Beast. They must find the incantation and the object of power that together can seal him away for good. |

Note: I know my icons are from roles Imogen Poots has done that take place in the 1930s, not 1926 as the novel takes place, but hopefully I'll be forgiven for the slight variation in fashion, because her face is perfect.
